When Reading the Bible Feels Boring (and What I’m Learning Through It)

If I’m being honest, reading the Bible isn’t always exciting. Most of the time, it feels repetitive, confusing, and—yes—boring.
And that’s not taboo to say. You’re not a bad Christian. You’re human.
✨📖 I recently finished reading Exodus and struggled to stay engaged. The details, the repetition—it was hard to push through. “Skimmed through” would be a very honest understatement.
Through it all, I’ve learned that God isn’t waiting for my focus to be perfect—He’s waiting for my heart to be open.
➡️ Boredom doesn’t mean disobedience.Sometimes we just need a fresh lens, not more effort.
➡️ The goal isn’t just to read—but to connect.God’s not keeping score. He’s inviting us into a relationship with Him.
So if you’re feeling stuck, unmotivated, or disconnected, you’re not alone. Here are a few things that have been helping me rediscover the beauty of Scripture:
✅ Switch it up: For the longest time, I thought the Bible had to be read from start to finish. That made sense to me—until I learned that many people don’t read it that way! Some days, healing may be what you need. Other days, forgiveness. Don’t be afraid to skip around.
✅ Slow down: Try praying over just one Psalm a day. Let the words breathe. It isn’t a race.
✅ Journal through it: Ask, “What does this show me about God?” “How does this connect to my life?” “What can I apply today?” Writing things out has helped me notice what I’d usually skim past.
✅ Pray honestly: It’s okay to tell God, “I’m struggling. I can’t focus. I’m bored. Am I doing this right?” Prayer isn’t polished—it’s personal.
And when I forget that, I come back to this truth: He meets me right where I am—even in my distraction, doubt, or daydreaming.
I know the lessons God wants me to learn won’t skip over me. He’ll make sure I receive what I need from His Word—even in my skimming, confusion, and “hot mess” moments.
And He’ll do the same for you. ❤️🙏
